What Pests Should I Look out for in Winter?
All animals respond to the seasons in one way or another. Pests will thrive in some environments and become almost entirely inactive in others. Being aware of these patterns will help significantly when it comes to protecting your home or business from destructive and unhygienic pests.
Our locally-based technicians offer a rapid response for all of your pest problems. Give our office a call today on 0141 471 9255 to organise your free survey.
What Pests Are a Problem in Winter?
There are no hard and fast rules when it comes to outlining what pests will be a problem in Winter, but you can generally expect to find the following in and around your home:
- Rodents, especially mice and rats
- Feral Pigeons
Mice and Rats
Rodents need food and shelter to survive. So long as they have energy, and are protected from the elements, they will be fine. Because the weather can get very harsh and cold during Winter, rats and mice will naturally try and make it inside where it is warmer and more sheltered.
It takes a while for rodents to grow a coat which will allow them to settle outside, and not all of them are talented nest builders. This means they will go to great lengths to make it inside and will extend existing gaps or even create entrances of their own.
Even rodents that tend to spend most of their time outside may in the Winter be forced indoors. It might be the case that the weather is just too cold to deal with, or it might be the case that there is no food around. Again, the pests will be forced indoors.
You can avoid these rodent problems by following the usual guidelines. First of all, make sure that all food is stored securely, in airtight containers and in tight cupboards. Additionally, clean up all food debris as quickly as possible and never leave it lying overnight.
Secondly, make sure that all gaps that rodents could exploit are filled in and sealed. It is possible to do this yourself, although employing the services of our technicians will ensure that the job is done both successfully and thoroughly in a cost-effective manner.
Although we are now getting to the very end of their season, and it will be unusual to see a wasp at this time, it is not entirely out of the question. This is because wasps will be without their queen, which means they are without eggs, and ultimately without food.
Wasps cannot eat the food that they gather for their young, and instead, eat the sugary substance that the larvae produce after feeding. Without eggs, there is no food, and instead, they will have to search for sweet substances like fermented fruit and tree sap.
This means they will spend much less time working around the nest and guarding it and will essentially become vagrants! Don’t be surprised to see wasps in and around your home in October through to early November.
Pigeons are not strictly a winter problem. Instead, they are an all-year-round problem. Due to their ability to produce their own food, called crop milk, they can settle and even reproduce during harsh winter conditions.
In fact, around 1 in 4 pigeons will reproduce during the winter season, which means they will require a nest. Many of them will go to great efforts to get inside and use their keen ability to spot potential nesting spots to identify entrances that they can exploit, often making them bigger in the process.
While many other birds will leave in the winter for more survivable conditions, pigeons are likely to stick around. This means that even in the season which should be quiet, feral pigeons will still spread disease and guano throughout your property.
